Postdoctoral positions are available in the Department of the Atmospheric and Oceanic sciences of Fudan University. Successful applicants will be under the guidance of Prof. Dezheng Sun to study the response of El Niño to the increases of CO2 and other manmade greenhouse gases in the atmosphere and more generally the stability of the earth’s climate system under anthropogenic forcing.
Prof. Sun’s research group has been at the forefront of global climate change research and has made many original findings including the role of the large-scale ocean-atmosphere coupling in regulating the tropical maximum SST, the diabatic and nonlinear origin of El Niño, and the role of nonlinear rectification of ENSO in generating climate anomalies on decadal and longer time-scales. The research findings by Prof. Sun’s group have been published in Science, J. Climate and many other prominent journals.
Prof. Sun has recently joined the faculty of Fudan University.Before then he had worked in many prominent institutes in the U.S. including the Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory (GFDL) at Princeton University, the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR), and through the Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences (CIRES), the Earth System Research Laboratory (ESRL) at Boulder. He taught both undergraduate and graduate courses in the area of global change science in University of Colorado at Boulder, and has won many grant awards from the US National Science Foundation and the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Prof. Sun received his Ph.D. in Meteorology from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
Prof. Sun’s research group approaches the concerned climate questions through the use of a hierarchy of climate models—mathematical models of varying complexity. (The models in use range from those consisting of just a few boxes for the climate system to fully coupled three dimensional climate system models such as NCAR’s CESM). Applicants must have a Ph.D. or near completing a Ph.D. in the field of atmospheric and oceanic sciences or closely related disciplines. Those who have modeling background or experience in analyzing simulations/projections by NCAR CESM or other IPCC CMIP models are particularly sought.
Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience. Compensation package for selected postdoctoral scientists includes university housing. The Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences is located in the beautiful Jiangwan campus at the Yangpu district of Shanghai.
