Hosting MAP-AQ Asian Office Shanghai will help the Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences and the Institute of Atmospheric Sciences of Fudan University connect to a broader spectrum of world-class resources, international organizations and global networks.
The Monitoring, Analysis and Prediction of Air Quality (MAP-AQ) initiative, endorsed by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and the International Global Atmospheric Chemistry (IGAC) project, aims to develop and implement a global air pollution monitoring, analysis, and prediction system for air quality with downscaling capability in regions of the world affected by high levels of atmospheric pollutants, in particular in Asia, Latin America, and Africa.

In October 2019, MAP-AQ Asian Office Shanghai, the first and only regional branch of MAP-AQ initiative in the world, was set up at Fudan University.
The main responsibilities of MAP-AQ Asian Office Shanghai are:
● To coordinate the work between research institutes and competent departments in Asia under the framework of MAP-AQ
● To assist government agencies across Asia in formulating location-specific policies for emission reduction
● To develop educational activities in support of capacity building in Asian countries
MAP-AQ Asian Office Shanghai is in close liaison with the Environment and Humanitarian Action (EHA) Network, initiated by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA) Joint Environment Unit (JEU), and is currently reaching out to potential collaborators including:
Climate and Clean Air Coalition (CCAC), led by UNEP
Global Platform on Air Quality and Health, led by the World Health Organization (WHO)
Integrated Research on Disaster Risk (IRDR) program, jointly established by the International Science Council (ISC) and the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR)
Hosting MAP-AQ Asian Office Shanghai presents a great opportunity for Fudan University to accelerate the development of its atmospheric sciences discipline.
Through MAP-AQ Asian Office Shanghai, the Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences and the Institute of Atmospheric Sciences of Fudan University have been expanding their international scientific cooperation and building their capacity in areas such as disaster prevention and mitigation, climate change responses and risk management, while contributing to the shaping of a global community with shared future for mankind.
In 2016, Fudan University set up the first atmospheric discipline in Shanghai, followed by the establishment of the Institute of Atmospheric Sciences (April 2016) and the Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences (April 2018).
Fudan’s atmospheric sciences discipline boasts ever-expanding educational and research networks across the globe that guarantee its faculty and students sufficient access to world-class resources.
By offering undergraduate and postgraduate degree programs as well as postdoctoral fellowships, it equips students with proven abilities to work in relevant sectors and contacts with potential employers and collaborators which make them highly sought-after candidates in global job markets.

The Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences and the Institute of Atmospheric Sciences have 26 full-time teaching staff and researchers. 15% of them are foreign nationals; 27% are overseas doctorate holders; and 50% were overseas postdoctoral fellows.
● International conferences
Fudan University has held a number of high-level international conferences both at home and abroad on atmospheric sciences.
January 2018: The 1st Fudan International Workshop on Atmospheric Science Frontiers in Shanghai
July 2019: International Workshop on Arctic Air-Ice-Sea Interactions and Their Possible Roles in Extreme Weather and Climate Occurrence, jointly held with University of Alaska Fairbanks, in Anchorage, Alaska, the U.S.
June 2021: The 2nd Fudan International Workshop on Atmospheric Science Frontiers in Shanghai (Event postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The time originally set was June 2020.)
November 2020: The International Forum on Chemical Weather Analysis and Forecasting, now under preparation, is planned to be jointly held with the World Meteorological Organization, the United Nations Environment Program, the World Health Organization, etc. in Shanghai. It will be the first ever international conference on chemical weather.
